So as we come to realize that, we have to begin to think about what do we have to do differently in order for students to feel that they too, no matter what their starting point might be, they too have a chance to be successful. And it starts with understanding where the gaps are. In talking with people who are in the programs and saying, “What is it that helps you make connections?” and “Where do you get sort of stymied because of the way we do business with you?” That’s where the student voice becomes so critical. We’ve got to hear what students have to say about what they experience, and we have to hear from them whether or not they feel welcome … and whether or not they see their faculty and their staff and their fellow students all being a part of the environment that will support them.
